Lebanon: Displaced Syrians in Lebanon feel trapped between two wars with uncertain future
Lebanon - Recent Displaced Syrians who fled to Lebanon after the fall of former leader Bashar al-Assad are forced into a desperate cycle of cross-border displacement amid ongoing violence and broken promises of safety. After the fall of the Assad regime on Dec 8, 2024, Shia Muslims, a sect of Islam that was part of Assad's power base in Syria, took refuge in Lebanon to hide from the taking-over by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). UNHCR figures show that Bosh is one of 36,000 new arrivals who entered Lebanon after the fall of the Assad regime. Some now live in Lebanon illegally, while others have arrived with proper paperwork. But the majority struggle in UNHCR camps, and are surviving on scarce resources. HTS have not responded directly to reports of threats but have promised protection to minority faiths. And at a national dialogue this week, Syria's interim president pledged an inclusive government. But minority groups say they still fear persecution if they return, while other Syrians, who fled Lebanon during Israeli strikes to rebuild home but faced new hardships, are driving a wave of reverse migration back into Lebanon. Mohammed al Dabbi was one of them. "I went to visit and I saw the situation. How can I go back to Syria? You see scenes that break the heart, and they're devastating," he said. According to the UNHCR, since the fall of the Assad regime, nearly 90,000 people have crossed the border from Syria into Lebanon. Among them, around 20,000 left Lebanon during Israeli strikes, but have now come back to Lebanon, once again seeking refuge here. Displaced Syrians in Lebanon say they feel trapped in a cycle of fleeing and returning - constantly facing a tough choice - to stay in Lebanon or risk an uncertain return home. In a bid to help make that decision, UNHCR is now in talks with authorities on both sides of the border to allow "go-and-see" visits, where one family member can travel home to check conditions in Syria while keeping the right to come back to Lebanon.
