Beautiful but deadly avalanche strikes twice in same area after record snowfalls in Turkey
This is the dramatic moment a massive avalanche cascades down a mountain, sending vast clouds of snow hundreds of metres into the air.
The incident occurred in Ayder Plateau, a renowned tourist destination in the Camlihesin district, Rize province, Turkey, on the evening of February 26.
Local media reported that two avalanches occurring within two days is unusual for the area.
This follows a previous snowslide in the same location on the morning of February 25.
Both snow collapses originated near the Gelintulu Waterfall, with snow masses rapidly descending into the Ayder River valley.
Turkey has experienced record snowfalls in recent weeks, and many regions report extreme weather conditions that have caused disruptions and increased avalanche risks.
The affected areas are uninhabited, preventing potential disasters.
The Rize Governorship issued a statement noting that the recent heavy snowfall added weight to existing snow layers, causing instability and increasing the risk of avalanches.
An experienced mountaineer said this should be a reminder to always respect mountain safety guidelines.
