A woman took her own life after keeping her dead cat for two days.

Pooja, 32, allegedly died by suicide after her pet cat passed away in Uttar Pradesh, India, on March 1.

Gajra Devi, Pooja's mother, recalled that her daughter adopted the feline eight years ago after divorcing her husband in Delhi.

However, when the cat passed away, the pet lover refused to bury it and kept it at home, believing it would come back to life.

Gajra said: 'She locked herself in her room on the third floor of our home. When I checked on her later that evening, I saw her hanging from the ceiling fan with the dead cat next to her.'

Locals reportedly heard her scream and rushed into the house before calling the police.

A forensic team and police arrived at the residence to investigate the incident.

Suicide remains a significant public health issue in India, with various factors such as family problems, financial stress, and mental health challenges contributing to the rates.
