Dozens of workers were rescued from an avalanche in India.

Authorities confirmed that 54 individuals were trapped after a snowslide struck a construction camp in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, on Friday, February 28.

The icefall struck the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) labour site near Mana village, approximately 5km from the Badrinath Temple.

Dramatic footage shows a helicopter assisting in the rescue operation.

Six aircraft were involved in the rescue efforts, including three from the Army Aviation Corps, two from the Indian Air Force (IAF), and a civil helicopter hired by the Army.

Emergency responders successfully rescued 46 individuals, while eight were tragically killed in the incident.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami thanked the rescue teams for their quick and coordinated response.

He said: 'An avalanche occurred a couple of days ago at India's first village - Mana - where several BRO workers were working. Following this, a rescue operation was jointly launched by the Army, BRO, ITBP, NDRF, SDRF, and district officials and rescued 46 people alive. It was a challenging task, but thanks to everyone, it has been a success.'

An avalanche is a sudden, fast-moving mass of snow, ice, and debris that can be triggered by various factors, such as heavy snowfall or an earthquake. Avalanches are extremely dangerous, as they can bury people, vehicles, and entire villages, causing severe injury or death within seconds.

The deadliest avalanche in recorded history occurred in 1970 in Peru, when an avalanche triggered by an earthquake buried the town of Yungay, killing around 22,000 people.
