Gaza Strip: Ramadan celebrations in Gaza City clouded by sadness, hardship
The start of Ramadan has brought no respite for Gaza City, as families are reeling from devastating losses and struggling to find solace in their faith. Iman Rahim is one of the many displaced residents of Gaza City, now living in a makeshift tent within a crowded shelter after her family's home was reduced to rubble in an Israeli airstrike. Iman's life was forever changed when her husband was killed, leaving her to care for their children alone. "As you can see we live in a tent during Ramadan. The kids are trying to feel like home, they are trying to decorate it as they used to do at our home, just to feel the blessings of this month. When I saw what they wrote on the tent I cried a lot, because I am responsible for them by myself, even filling water and taking care of my sick daughter. We don't even have a bathroom. Providing them with food is also very difficult," the poor widow cried. Meanwhile, another displaced mother Nevin al-Naji made a heartfelt attempt to decorate their humble tent to celebrate the holy month. "Our life is indescribable, all the familiar places have been destroyed, so I tried to decorate our tent to improve our mood," she told reporter in her tent recently provided by the Chinese government as part of humanitarian aids. Additionally, Gaza's markets are struggling, and buying basic Ramadan items has become a luxury in the aftermath of the Israeli attacks. "This year's Ramadan is different from before. We expected that with the return of the displaced people to the north, the demand for lanterns and Ramadan supplies would increase, and it would be [at least] the same as last year," said festive decoration vendor Abdullah Latif. Israel stopped all humanitarian aid supplies from entering Gaza Strip as of Sunday morning, the third day of the Ramadan this year, due to disagreements with Hamas on their ceasefire deal.
