A turtle appeared to perform a pole dance inside its aquarium at a conservation facility in Japan.

Footage shows the sea turtle with front flippers coiled around a pole while the bottom part of its shell swayed underwater at Umigame Kouen Sea Turtle Park in Mie Prefecture on March 3.

The marine mammal paddled with its back limbs while seemingly shaking its body.

Its caretaker said: 'A customer asked me what it was doing, and it was the first time we had seen a turtle do it before, so we are not yet sure.'

Turtles often grab onto branches, sticks, or poles in water to help them climb or stabilise themselves.
