A Lithuanian rower caught in a cyclone for three days was rescued off the coast of Australia.

Aurimas Mockus was attempting to row from San Diego to Brisbane when he was battered by Tropical Cyclone Alfred off the Queensland coast, on February 28.

Authorities said they received an emergency signal that the Lithuanian was stranded some 450 miles east of Mackay. They established communication with him on March 1, despite the difficult conditions.

Dramatic footage shows the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), the Australian Defence Force, and the Australian Navy battling to reach Aurimas amid 62-mph winds and choppy waters.

In a statement on Sunday, March 2, AMSA said: 'We tasked two of our Challenger search and rescue aircraft, established initial communications with the rower, and worked with the Australian Defence Force and the Royal Australian Navy HMAS Choules L100, which reached and rescued the rower this morning.

'Thank you to all involved for your invaluable assistance with this rescue.'
