This is the horrifying moment floods surged into a shopping mall amid heavy rain in Indonesia.

Footage shows the strong current of floodwaters entering the ground floor of the Mega Bekasi Hypermall in Bekasi City, West Java Province, on Tuesday, March 4.

Terrified shoppers and employees quickly moved up the escalators with their belongings. An elderly local was seen crying in shock.

Heavy rain battered the region on Monday night, triggering floods across the city. Authorities reported that the overflowing Bekasi River caused the deluge.

Mayor Tri Adhianto said that eight sub-districts were affected.

He added: 'Bekasi City was paralysed to the main road, including government offices, affected by the flood.'

The disaster management team is still conducting data collection and post-disaster management efforts.

Indonesia and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia have been experiencing the monsoon season, which typically brings soaring temperatures followed by intense afternoon rainstorms. These conditions have triggered widespread flash floods and landslides across the region.
