Supporters of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) crashed a Freemason fundraiser over alleged 'animal abuse' in circus shows.

Chaos erupted at the Sharon Shrine's Potentate's Ball in Tyler, Texas, on March 1 as animal rights activists entered to confront the newly appointed leader, Mike Cowan.

The demonstration called for an end to the use of animals in performances, such as elephants. PETA claims the Shrine's practices are cruel.

PETA's Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said: 'In nature, elephants help each other survive. But Sharon Shrine forces them to balance on pedestals.'

The Sharon Shrine Circus collaborates with Carson & Barnes Circus, which has been cited for over 100 violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

Footage shows demonstrators being guided out of the building by officers.

PETA, known for its advocacy against animal cruelty, continues to push for stricter enforcement of animal welfare laws and the elimination of animal testing.
