China - March 03, 2025 China to impose additional tariffs on some U.S. imports (Voice_over) Trade tensions between China and the US are escalating. A day after Washington announced its latest tariff hike, Beijing condemned the move and announced retaliatory measures. China’s State Council says the country will impose additional tariffs on various US imports, effective March 10. (Sound_bite) Ji Wenhua, Professor, School of Law, University of International Business and Economics: "I believe China's decision is well-founded in legal terms. This measure is based on China's Tariff Law, which explicitly states in Article 18 that if any country or region violates international agreements by imposing restrictions, bans, or additional tariffs that disrupt normal trade with China, China has the right to impose retaliatory tariffs on imports from that country or region." (Voice_over) China’s Ministry of Commerce strongly opposes America’s tariffs, calling them a violation of World Trade Organization, or WTO, rules that undermine bilateral trade ties. The ministry confirmed that China has filed a complaint under the WTO’s dispute settlement mechanism to protect its interests. At a press conference on Tuesday, National People’s Congress spokesperson Lou Qinjian addressed the issue. (Sound_bite) Lou Qinjian, Spokesman, third session of 14th National People's Congress: "China-US economic ties are mutually beneficial. Over 46 years of diplomatic relations, bilateral trade has grown over 200-fold, with two-way investment reaching $250 billion, benefiting both nations and the global economy. US tariff hikes violate WTO rules and disrupt global supply chains. China urges the US to engage in fair dialogue to resolve disputes." (Voice_over) Beijing has sharply criticized Washington’s move, accusing it of undermining global trade norms and increasing costs for American businesses and consumers.
