Missing Philippine Air Force fighter found with two pilots dead
A missing fighter jet was found with its two pilots dead on a mountain range in the Philippines.
The light combat aircraft of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) was carrying out a 'tactical night operation' when it reportedly lost contact in Bukidnon province, in the early hours of March 4.
Rescue teams tracked the fallen FA-50 plane using signals from its emergency locator transmitter and beacons. They found its burnt remains on Wednesday on Mount Kalatungan, where soldiers had earlier requested an airstrike to battle dozens of alleged communist rebels.
Authorities said the charred bodies of the pilots Major Jude Salang-oy and 1st Lieutenant AJ Dadulla were found a few metres away from the wreckage.
Colonel Antonio Duluan Jr., commander of the Philippine Army's 403rd Infantry Brigade, said the cadavers were carried in body bags down the mountain at around 10 pm.
He said: 'In bringing down the remains, the soldiers and volunteers braved the muddy trails and bad weather.'
Soldiers also reportedly found one of two 500lb bombs the jet had been carrying for the tactical operations. It was detonated on site while troops were still searching for the other explosive.
In a statement, PAF spokesman Colonel Ma. Consuelo Castillo said: 'With deep regret and profound sadness, the PAF announces the loss of the two pilots aboard.
'We are committed to providing all the necessary support to the bereaved families during this difficult time. Meanwhile, we also request the nation's prayers for the eternal repose of our fallen pilots, whose service and heroism we deeply honour.'
The PAF has temporarily grounded its remaining 11 FA-50 jets pending investigations into the cause of the crash.
