United States - March 05, 2025 Hawaii Volcanoes National Park – Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano is putting on a fiery show, thrilling onlookers with its latest eruptive episode spewing lava fountains in the Halemaʻumaʻu crater. The stunning display, captured on video on 5 March, marks the volcano nearing a baker’s dozen of eruptions. The U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory revealed that episode 12 of the Halemaʻumaʻu eruption kicked off on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. HST. Sporadic lava flows danced between the south and north cones before the episode wrapped up at 10:37 a.m. HST on Wednesday. This dazzling round of lava fountains is the 12th since 23 December, the USGS confirmed. Each fiery outburst rages for about 14 hours, followed by unpredictable pauses lasting between one and 12 days. While past episodes have seen lava fountains rocket 600 feet skyward, this latest spectacle is a slower burn but no less jaw-dropping. Fountains reached heights of 30 to 165 feet, though the USGS predicts they’ll climb higher. After a quiet spell overnight, with both south and north vents simmering down, the action roared back to life. The USGS reported the vents erupted again around 8 a.m. Wednesday, following 12 hours of stillness. Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano continues to wow, proving nature’s power is as unpredictable as it is mesmerising.
