US: Avalanche Chaos Shuts Down Utah Roads as Snow Pummels Cottonwood Canyons
United States - March 04, 2025 Cottonwood Canyons, Utah - Motorists were left stranded as the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) slammed the brakes on SR-210, closing the vital road due to avalanche mayhem. The shutdown came as UDOTavy teams battled relentless snow, with both natural and controlled avalanches burying the route. The closure sparked chaos, but relief rolled in when SR-210 finally reopened after grueling mitigation efforts. UtahDOT crews swarmed the canyon, racing against time to clear the mess for the PM commute to and from AltaCentral. AltaAlerts and SnowbirdAlerts buzzed with updates as the situation unfolded. Yet, drivers weren’t out of the woods. UDOT warned of heavy downhill travel delays and fully stopped traffic stretching for miles. Snowbird-bound visitors crawled along, forced to a snail’s pace by treacherous conditions. “Expect extended periods of gridlock,” UDOT blasted, urging patience. Plows rumbled into action, but the agency pleaded with drivers to steer clear and give them space. “Please drive with caution and give plows room to clear!” came the urgent cry. With snow still hammering the canyons, officials braced for more headaches, predicting parking area exits would turn into bottlenecks. For now, Cottonwood Canyons remains a snowy snarl-up.
