China: China's Shenzhen deploys AI-powered virtual employees for government services
China - Recent China's Shenzhen deploys AI-powered virtual employees for government services (Voice_over) Government offices in south China's Shenzhen City are now using open-source large language models from AI company DeepSeek to assist with various tasks and services. At the Futian Bureau of Government Services and Data Management, 70 of these new "digital workers" are up and running. The bureau's deputy director says the smart assistants can handle as many as 240 different service scenarios. (Sound_bite) Gao Zeng, Deputy director, Futian Bureau of Government Services and Data Management: "Digital intelligent workers are a concept of AI agents, serving as assistants to help with a range of tasks from public services and community governance to investment management and document writing. This human-AI collaboration aims to ease the workload at the grassroots level.” (Voice_over) Gao stressed that AI assistants aren't meant to replace humans outright. For every AI worker, there's a human who's responsible for it, including taking the blame if anything goes wrong. (Sound_bite) Gao Zeng, Deputy director, Futian Bureau of Government Services and Data Management: "We have set clear ethical guidelines and technical standards. Every digital worker has a designated guardian responsible for guiding its operations. If any problems arise with the digital worker, the guardian must take responsibility for what happened." (Voice_over) Officials at the bureau say the introduction of the AI workers has boosted efficiency across various tasks, with error rates in document formatting, for example, at under five percent.
