Teenager stuck in quicksand escapes after following directions to lie flat and crawl to safety
A teenager stuck in quicksand escaped after following directions to lie flat and crawl to safety.
Footage shows the calm youngster lying on the boggy ground with his legs trapped inside at Gulangyu Island in Fujian, China, on February 1.
A tour guide can be heard giving him instructions, which he promptly followed.
He carefully removed his legs one at a time, laid flat on the wet surface, then turned over onto his stomach and crawled back out of the quicksand.
The holidaymaker did not sustain any injuries from the incident.
Quicksand is a mixture of sand, water, and clay, creating a dense, fluid-like substance. People who get stuck in quicksand usually sink only up to their knees or waist.
When undisturbed, quicksand appears solid. However, when pressure is applied—such as stepping into it—the water and sand particles separate, causing the ground to lose its firmness and behave like a liquid.
Gulangyu Island is a pedestrian-only island and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site that attracts roughly 10 million tourists every year.
