A bridge weakened by a surging river collapsed in Indonesia.

Footage shows the steel road bridge caving in amid the rapid water flow in West Nias Regency, North Sumatra, on March 5.

The incident left three districts - Nias, Gunungsitoli, and North Nias - cut off from vital supplies.

Regent Ellyunus Waruwu said: 'Currently, the main access is still cut off, and the local government, together with the technical team, is conducting an assessment to find an emergency solution.

'We have reported this incident to the North Sumatra Provincial Government because the bridge falls under their jurisdiction. We are pushing for the immediate construction of an emergency bridge to restore public access while awaiting the construction of a permanent bridge.

'The collapse of this bridge has had a major impact on people's mobility, the distribution of basic necessities, agricultural products, and access to health and education services. Fortunately, there were no fatalities in the incident.'

Several areas across the country have been experiencing relentless rainfall, prompting officials to urge residents to evacuate when necessary.
