China: Smart factories transform China's industrial landscape
Smart factories transform China's industrial landscape (Voice_over) The number of smart factories in China is growing. At this Xiaomi auto plant in Beijing, a new vehicle rolls off the production line every 76 seconds thanks to the more than 700 robots that operate around the clock. The assembly workshop is guided by artificial intelligence technology which dramatically increases its efficiency. (Sound_bite) Kang Yanzhao, Director, battery workshop, Xiaomi Auto plant: "We have the industry's first AI-powered X-ray system that can inspect every large die-casting part and it's dozens of times more efficient than our manual inspection." (Voice_over) Traditional energy enterprises in China are also driving the country’s transformation to intelligent manufacturing. With digital twin technology, China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation, or Sinopec, has developed an industrial internet platform that’s boosted productivity at a plant in Beijing by more than 30 percent. (Sound_bite) Wang Zizong, Deputy chief engineer, Sinopec: "By combining the latest information technology with traditional petrochemical industrial technologies and systems engineering, we've been able to really improve resource efficiency across the whole supply chain and make production processes much smarter.” (Voice_over) According to a recent report by Renmin University of China, the large-scale and rapid expansion of the country’s intelligent manufacturing sector will require a massive increase in purple collar workers, who have a mix of practical, hands-on skills and academic knowledge. The report says that by the year 2035, the industry will need roughly 31 million purple collar workers. [Restriction: No access Chinese mainland]
