Eight fishermen stranded on an island were rescued by marine police in Thailand.

The crew had sailed to Koh Racha Noi island near the tourist island of Phuket on March 8, but found themselves trapped amid rough weather.

The Region 3 Marine Police said a rescue boat was dispatched on Sunday, March 9, after they received an emergency call about the stranded locals.

Footage shows officers helping the fishermen board a T.111 ship to take them back to Phuket.

Vice Admiral Suwat Donsdul, Commander of the 3rd Naval Area, said: 'According to the report, there were eight people stranded on an island in the area of Koh Racha Noi. These fishermen traveled to fish and spent the night on the island.

'In the morning, the ferry appointed to pick them up failed to leave due to strong waves and winds. Small boats were also unable to pick them up. The T.111 ship was then deployed to carry out the rescue mission.'

Authorities said they were investigating if the fishermen had been trawling the area legally.

The Thai Meteorological Department on Monday, March 10, forecasted thunderstorms in 30 per cent of Thailand's southwestern coast, including Phuket.

Waves were predicted to reach up to two metres (seven feet) offshore.
