A monitor lizard was seen swimming through a flooded street before slipping under a home in Indonesia.

Footage shows the reptile gliding on the surface of the water with only its head poking out of the water during spells of heavy rain in Bogor, West Java, on March 4.

The animal appeared when the downpour had stopped and was spotted by shocked locals who watched it from the balcony.

The monitor lizard then glided just beneath the roof of a submerged house before disappearing.

Resident Anggi Gusriyandari said: 'Eild animals like snakes and monitor lizards come out and enter our homes.'

Heavy rains hit Bogor Regency during the week which caused the Ciliwung River to overflow.

Due to severe flooding and landslides in the region, Bogor Regent Rudy Susmanto declared a disaster emergency status until March 17.

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Southeast Asia. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.
