Recently, a public toilet at Minyuan Square in Heping District, Tianjin, became the first in China to introduce advanced ultraviolet (UV) automatic disinfection technology, providing a safer and more hygienic restroom environment for citizens.

This technology utilises UVC (ultraviolet C) rays, which have strong sterilisation capabilities. UVC effectively destroys microbial DNA chains, preventing reproduction and self-replication, thus achieving thorough disinfection.

The system uses millimetre-wave radar to accurately detect human movement. Once a person leaves, the UV lamps automatically activate, ensuring a 360-degree, thorough disinfection of the restroom. The process is divided into two stages: pre-use disinfection and post-use final disinfection, each lasting around 30 seconds, with a sterilisation efficiency of 99.99%.

Equipped with smart control features, the system adjusts the intensity and duration of UV exposure based on real-time restroom conditions, ensuring optimal disinfection while preventing direct UV exposure to humans.

The introduction of UV automatic disinfection technology has significantly improved public toilet hygiene. According to sanitation department monitoring, the total number of pathogenic bacteria has decreased by 92% after disinfection, offering a cleaner and healthier environment for users.

Additionally, the system reduces the workload for cleaning staff, allowing them to focus more on daily maintenance and management. Statistics show that the technology has cut cleaning labour costs by 65%.

With over 2,000 daily users, the restroom has received a 97.6% satisfaction rate in the first week of operation. Citizens have praised the improved hygiene, stating that they feel much more at ease and comfortable using the facilities.
