A grocery store owner in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, Indonesia, was recently scammed by a man selling a sack of sugar that turned out to be filled with sand.

Security camera footage from the store captured the suspect, a man on a motorcycle, arriving at the shop on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.

Edrial, 52, the store owner, stated that the man offered a 50-kilogram sack of sugar for Rp 800,000.

"I bought it because I needed it. The price was also standard," Edrial said, adding, "Then I told my wife at the cashier not to pay, and I checked the contents of the sack. It turned out there was no sugar, the sack was only filled with sand."

The shop owner attempted to chase the perpetrator, who had already fled after receiving the payment.

According to Edrial, his wife claimed she did not hear him because she was busy serving other customers.
