Hero police officers saved the life of a drunk driver who crashed into a patrol car.

Lyn Alan Smith, 33, allegedly intoxicated, slammed into Officer Isaac Gorskikh's vehicle in Rowlett, Texas, on March 6.

Footage captured by another officer shows Gorskikh smashing the window of the locked and burning black vehicle to reach the unresponsive driver.

He can be seen dragging the man out, hoisting him over a concrete barrier, and shielding them both from speeding traffic.

Police Corporal Jaqueline Vergara said: 'The officer, immediately after being struck, exits his squad unit. Instead of assessing his own injuries, he doesn't think twice—his law enforcement instincts kick in.'

Smith now faces serious charges as the investigation continues.
