European leaders back Arab plan for Gaza's reconstruction
Storyline: The foreign ministers of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy issued a joint statement on Saturday, welcoming the plan for restoring peace in Gaza initiated by Egypt and other Arab countries. The statement noted that this plan provides a practical and viable pathway for Gaza reconstruction. If implemented, it is expected to rapidly and sustainably improve the living conditions of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The four countries also explicitly affirmed their support for the central role of the Palestinian Authority in the reconstruction efforts. The plan, which is estimated to cost 53 billion U.S. dollars and aims to avoid displacing Palestinians from the enclave, was accepted at the closing of the emergency Arab summit held in Cairo on March 4, with full support from participating Arab leaders. According to the summit's final statement, the Arab leaders issued a warning that any attempts to displace the Palestinian people or to annex any part of the occupied Palestinian territory would lead the region into a new phase of conflict, undermine opportunities for stability, and expand the conflict to other countries in the region. The plan counters a previous proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump, which suggests redeveloping Gaza and relocating Gazans to neighboring countries, including Egypt and Jordan. Oren Marmorstein, spokesperson for Israel's foreign ministry, rejected the plan on X, reiterating Israel's support for Trump's plan. Shotlist: FILE: London, UK - July 4-5, 2024: 1.
