The daughter of Philippine drugs war madman Rodrigo Duterte spoke to reporters about his arrest and flight to face trial in the Netherlands over alleged crimes against humanity.

Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte slammed the alleged political persecution her family is facing after her father was detained at an airport in the capital Manila on Tuesday morning, March 11, on a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

She said: 'We can see what the current administration is doing, how they are oppressing us. We are no longer a member of the ICC, and when they filed the ICC complaint, they were already out of time. We contested that they have no jurisdiction. We are the only country in the world cooperating with the ICC. The Philippines is like a doormat for other countries, not just the ICC.

'It's saddening because where else can you find a country that hands over its citizens to foreigners? It is embarrassing as a Filipino.'

The Duterte scion, who is currently facing an impeachment complaint for alleged corruption and misuse of government funds, is embroiled in a bitter conflict with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

She had forged an alliance with Bongbong that saw a landslide win in the 2022 national elections. But their partnership has since unraveled over various clashes regarding issues such as diplomacy and the country's territorial dispute with China.

Marcos Jr. has defended the government's role in the older Duterte's arrest.

He said: 'Interpol asked for help and we obliged because we have commitments to the Interpol which we have to fulfill. If we don't do that, they will no longer help us with other cases involving Filipino fugitives abroad. We cannot say no to Interpol when they ask us to catch a wanted individual.'

Rodrigo was flown out of the country on a chartered plane to The Hague on Tuesday evening. He was reported to have arrived in Dubai for a layover this morning before continuing the journey to the Rotterdam The Hague Airport.

Duterte is the architect of the country's notorious war on drugs, which police claimed saw more than 6,000 drug suspects killed. However, human rights groups said the alleged extrajudicial executions reached up to 30,000.

In 2018, Duterte withdrew the Philippines from the International Criminal Court (ICC) after it began investigating alleged human rights abuses linked to his war on drugs. He had argued that the ICC had no jurisdiction over the Philippines and accused it of being biased.
