China’s open-source, electric humanoid robot Tiangong shows off enhanced mobility (Voice_over) Tiangong, an open-source all electric humanoid robot developed by Embodied AI Robotics Innovation Center in Beijing, has been undergoing a series of tests recently. The robot is 163 centimeters tall and weighs 43 kilos. Despite its large chest cavity where its batteries are stored, it can run at about 12 kilometers per hour. Recently, it climbed 134 steps to reach the top of a hill in a city park and navigated across snow, ice and other unstable surfaces with ease. Going forward, its developers say they'll start incorporating short-term memory features that will make its movements more fluid. (Sound_bite) Wei Jiaxing, Researcher, National and Local Co-built Embodied AI Robotics Innovation Center: "On the one hand, we will expose the robot to a variety of random yet general tasks and scenarios to strengthen its generalization ability. Additionally, we will incorporate short-term memory, enabling it to better understand and control itself in each scenario." (Voice_over) According to a report from the first China Humanoid Robot Industry Conference held last year, the size of the country's humanoid robot market was valued at around 377 million U.S. dollars in 2024. By 2029, the market value is expected to reach 10 billion. [Restriction: No access Chinese mainland]
