Fiji: Fiji, PNG journalists praise China's help in strengthening climate resilience
Journalists from Fiji and Papua New Guinea have praised China's help in strengthening their countries' resilience to climate change, emphasizing the tangible benefits Chinese initiatives have brought to local communities. China has been collaborating with small island nations to establish low-carbon demonstration zones, develop and implement mitigation and adaptation projects, and set up the China-Pacific Island Countries Climate Action Cooperation Center, supporting small island nations in addressing climate change and improving people's livelihoods and well-being. In 2014, China and Fiji established a South-South cooperation mechanism to address climate change. In May 2022, the two countries signed a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the provision of goods under the mechanism for addressing climate change. Last year, during a meeting in Beijing with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China's commitment to supporting Fiji and other Pacific island nations in their fight against climate change. Papua New Guinea (PNG) is another Pacific island country that has benefited from climate cooperation with China. In 2023, the two countries signed an MOU to establish a low-carbon demonstration zone under South-South cooperation, reinforcing PNG's efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The Chinese government has provided financial assistance to the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) every year since 1998, to support Pacific island countries in tackling climate change and achieving sustainable development. China's approach to climate cooperation, particularly its focus on large-scale infrastructure projects and also renewable energy solutions, they provide us with the tools that we need to address these challenges directly. So Chinese investment in solar, in hydro and also in wind energy, for example, could be a game changer for Fiji as we move towards more sustainable energy solutions and also reduce our dependence on fossil fuels."; FILE: Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea - 2018 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Gabriel Bego, journalist, NBC PNG: "Collaborations with countries like China is very important in having mutual understanding and cooperation that is beneficial to communities affected on a daily basis. Collaboration in terms of technology and expertise, capacity building and resources, such as funding to mitigation and adaptation efforts can empower local communities to overcome the challenges. It is also crucial to Papua New Guinea and other Pacific island countries facing similar challenges."; FILE: Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea - 2018 8. Various of traffic.
