Juvenile hippo is loving life after being paired with a female for breeding
A juvenile hippo is enjoying life after he was paired with a female for breeding.
Moo Ton, a five-year-old hippo, was introduced to Moo Manao, an eight-year-old female, as his breeding partner on February 9.
Footage shows the pair swimming together in their enclosure at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi, Thailand.
Zoo officials facilitated the pairing in front of visitors, who watched as the two hippos interacted.
Moo Ton is the elder brother of the famous pygmy hippo, Moo Deng, who became an internet sensation in September 2024 after viral images of her spread online, drawing crowds to the zoo.
The pygmy hippopotamus is listed as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List and is classified under Appendix II of CITES.
Pygmy hippos are small hippopotamids native to the forests and swamps of West Africa, primarily in Liberia, with small populations in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Ivory Coast.
