US: Chinese envoy urges more efforts for ceasefire in Sudan during Ramadan
A Chinese envoy to the United Nations on Thursday called on all parties to the conflict in Sudan to achieve a ceasefire during Ramadan as soon as possible. The armed conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has been escalating, particularly in Khartoum and central and western Sudan, with the two warring parties mobilizing for decisive battles. China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, said at the UN Security Council meeting on Sudan that next month, the country's armed conflict will mark two years since its inception, and there is still no sign for peace. Recently, the RSF has frequently launched attacks on camps for displaced persons in and around El Fasher in western Sudan. Hostilities between the warring parties have continued unabated, and the scale of civilian casualties and displacement has continued to expand, worsening the already dire humanitarian crisis, said Fu. China calls on all parties to the conflict to implement the requirements of the Security Council resolutions and respond to the general call of the international community, realize ceasefire and de-escalation of the situation and create conditions for aid to flow in. Fu noted that China has repeatedly stressed that all parties to the conflict should abide by the obligations of international humanitarian law, protect civilians from the impact of the war, stop attacks on civilian facilities such as hospitals, schools, and markets, and safeguard the basic rights of vulnerable groups such as women and children. China welcomes the Sudanese government to provide necessary support and protection for some displaced persons returning home, and supports the United Nations to closely coordinate and cooperate with the Sudanese government and other relevant parties to restore humanitarian transportation channels to El Fasher and other places as soon as possible to ensure the safe transportation and timely distribution of relief supplies, said Fu. China has noted that the relevant parties have further signed a 'transitional constitution' a few days ago. This move may exacerbate tensions and increase the risk of division, which runs counter to the goal of conflict resolution. China reiterates that Sudan's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity should be respected, and the UN Charter and international law must be observed."; [SHOT OVERLAYIN SOUNDBITE] 5.
