Patients evacuated from fire at hospital in Bangkok
Hundreds of patients and staff were evacuated as a fire ripped through a hospital in Bangkok.
The medical team along with the infirm fled from the Ramathibodi Hospital after a fire erupted in an X-ray room on the second floor of the hospital's main building, on the evening of March 11.
Dramatic footage shows rescuers carrying the sick out of the facility as smoke started filling the corridors. Doctors, nurses and relatives were seen fanning patients in hospital beds as firefighters wheeled more gurneys out of the building.
A firefighter named Sirisak Saengloi said: 'We received a report at around 7:20 pm. As soon as we entered, we saw thick smoke pouring out and spreading to the other floors. Luckily, the fire wasn't that large. We rushed to evacuate the patients and more than 100 staff through the hospital's right wing. No one was injured or killed, and only a few suffered smoke inhalation.'
Dr. Athit Angkanon, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Ramathibodi Hospital, said the fire began at the staff desk of the X-ray room.
He said: 'At the time, there was no one in the room. The smoke billowed and spread to the adjacent areas, including a blood sampling room and an oxygen room. A patient who saw the smoke quickly called the staff and the fire department. Fortunately, no one was injured.'
He added that the hospital's main building will be temporarily closed for structural integrity checks.
Authorities said the cause of the fire was under investigation.
Fires in Thailand are commonly caused by aging electrical infrastructure, extensive use of wood in construction, and regional heatwaves that can exacerbate fire risks. Rapid fire response can also be hampered in densely packed neighbourhoods where narrow streets can delay firefighting efforts.
