Brave locals climbed into a well to rescue a stranded cow in India.

Villagers were about to fetch water when they noticed the hapless bovine inside the pit in Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh, on March 15.

This prompted the concerned residents, along with Atal Kamdhenu Gau Seva Sansthan, to retrieve the animal.

Footage shows one of the rescuers holding onto a rope while descending into the well, while his colleagues assist him by grasping onto the cord to prevent him from falling.

Upon reaching the cow, he secured it with the ropes before the men hoisted it out.

After a laborious effort hauling the animal, they successfully removed it from the well and removed the rope around it.

The animal did not sustain any injuries from the incident.

Wildlife worker Gaurav Mishra said: 'After descending into the well and tying the cow, Jitendra Singh, along with Sarthak Mishra, Sonu Singh, Neeraj Pratap Singh, Vipin Pandey, Abhilash Dwivedi, and Bholu, got help and then took the cow out safely from the well.'

Atal Kamdhenu Gau Seva Sansthan rescues, treats, and cares for abandoned cows and bulls, providing them with protection and medical aid to prevent suffering on the streets.

India has hundreds of thousands of cows roaming its streets.

It is partly due to devout locals who follow Hindu customs, with cows regarded as sacred animals that cannot be eaten or slaughtered once they have stopped producing milk. The majority of states ban the sale or slaughter of cows.

Instead of dealing with the economic burden of keeping their spent cattle, many farmers let the beasts roam the streets—leading to chaos when the animals become agitated and turn their fury on humans.
