A member of the Yemeni public on Monday expressed fears of the militarization of the Red Sea due to the United States military operations in the Middle East, after the U.S. launched large-scale airstrikes on the Houthi forces in Yemen on March 15. The U.S. 's airstrikes, which has killed over 50 people and wounded about 100 others since Saturday, have prompted retaliatory attacks from the Houthis on U.S. aircraft carriers and accompanying ships in the Red Sea. On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump warned of strong retaliation against any Houthi attacks. The deadly U.S. attacks sparked mass rallies on Monday in both the capital Sanaa and the port city of Hodeidah, where thousands of Yemenis gathered to denounce the United States who they believe is the root cause of unrest and chaos around the world. From November 2023 to mid-January this year, the Houthi group launched dozens of drone and rocket attacks against Israel-linked ships and Israeli cities to show solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The attacks later expanded to include U.S. and British ships after the U.S.-British navy coalition started to intervene, launching air raids and missile strikes against Houthi targets to deter the group.
