Rival football fans fought outside a stadium in France after violence erupted during the match.

The game between Montpellier Herault and Saint-Etienne at Stade de la Mosson was halted on Sunday, March 16, after some supporters let off flares, causing a small fire.

Local reports said frustrated Montpellier fans, upset by their team's 2-0 deficit, threw smoke bombs onto the field. Referee Francois Letexier suspended the game in the 63rd minute as fumes engulfed the pitch.

Dramatic footage shows supporters running away from the violent crowd while smoke is seen in the background.

The incident comes amid growing concerns over fan violence in French football following a previous clash between Montpellier and Marseille.

French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has vowed to address stadium security concerns and is set to meet with football authorities.
