This is the terrifying moment a landslide crashes down a hillside next to homes in Indonesia.

The incident occurred in a residential area in Kapala Pitu District, North Toraja Regency, South Sulawesi, on Wednesday morning, March 19.

Dramatic footage shows debris cascading downhill, reaching the highway, and blocking the Trans Sulawesi road along the North Toraja - Mamuju route.

Access to the main road for thousands of residents was cut off, isolating the four sub-districts of Rindingallo, Baruppu, Buntu Pepasan, and Awan Rantekarua.

Although there were no casualties, residents' yards and gardens were severely damaged.

Head of the Rindingallo sector police, Adjunct Police Commissioner Kusuma Tombilangi, said: 'The landslide occurred around 8 am. There were no casualties, but the main road access was closed. I have urged residents to remain alert for potential further landslides.'

The incident is believed to have been triggered by heavy rain in the region over the past week.

Landslides are common in Indonesia, particularly during the rainy season. The risk is further exacerbated by deforestation and illegal mining activities in remote areas.
