Naples, United States - March 11, 2025 Forest Ranger Dormer sprang into action on March 11 after a desperate call about two hikers trapped at Conklin Gully in Hi Tor Wildlife Management Area. Mud, erosion, and raging high-water flows had cut off their escape route. The Ontario County High Angle Rope Team and Yates County Rope Team raced to assist, joining Ranger Dormer and local fire departments. Together, they rigged a daring high angle rope system. Rescuers rappelled into the treacherous gully, secured the stranded pair, and hauled them 200 feet to safety just as temperatures plummeted and night closed in. Miraculously, neither hiker was hurt, though Naples Ambulance checked them over. Meanwhile, chaos erupted elsewhere as Forest Rangers tackled a staggering 25 wildfires between March 8 and 17, scorching over 558 acres across eight counties. The biggest inferno roared through Westhampton in Suffolk County, devouring 424 acres. It ignited on March 8, but by March 10, heroic firefighters had it fully contained. The blaze was officially extinguished on March 13. Investigators revealed that at least eight of these fires stemmed from reckless debris burning, sparking outrage among officials.
