France: French public eye alternatives to US goods amid rising trade tensions
Storyline: Rising trade tensions between the U.S. and the EU have sparked concern among French consumers, who are already seeking alternatives to American-made products as the potential impact of tariffs on their wallets looms. On March 12, local time, the European Commission announced that starting next month, the EU will impose retaliatory tariffs on 26 billion euros worth of U.S. goods in response to the 25 percent tariffs that the U.S. has placed on all imported steel and aluminum. The EU's countermeasures will be implemented in two phases, with plans to begin on April 1 and become fully effective on April 13. While reactions are mixed, many French citizens expressed concern about the escalating trade tensions. Several individuals acknowledged the potential impact on their daily lives. Author and director Hugo said that the EU tariffs will undoubtedly affect people, while Mathis, a resident, agreed, saying that while the situation feels distant, he believes it will eventually impact him. Christophe, a retired worker, concurred, stating that the tariffs "will inevitably influence our lives." Maelys, a local student, said she is already bracing for a need to readjust her spending. The tensions have even led French residents to reflect on how much they rely not just on physical products from the U.S., but on the country's ubiquitous online platforms. Hugo echoed this sentiment, saying he is committed to increasing support for local businesses and producers. Others, like Mathis and Christophe, indicated a preference for European products but acknowledged occasional purchases of U.S. goods, particularly if they offer better value. Christophe admitted a fondness for American peanut butter but emphasized his general preference for European or French products. Shotlist: FILE: Paris, France - March 26-27, 2019: 1. I don't see how it could go well with this mindset. So ultimately, the one at the end of the chain will be the consumer, meaning, us. So yes, it definitely has an impact." I think of my Amazon account, Spotify, Netflix, Uber, Facebook. Maybe not in terms of physical products, but in terms of software, I think we could be taxed more. Could I consume differently by choosing European or French products? I imagine some alternatives exist, perhaps they're less well-known but still very good. It's a matter of looking into it and finding what‘’s available. I think I could adapt without much difficulty. However, today, I remain highly dependent on American tools." However, there are still local options, local economies. So that's what we'll do. It's already what we're doing, but we'll do it even more." FILE: Paris, France - Date Unknown: 11.
