This is the terrifying moment a pickup truck smashed into a concrete barrier and a power pole in Thailand.

The vehicle was travelling along Srinagarindra Road in Samut Prakan province when it struck the concrete object, at around 11 pm on March 17.

Dashcam footage shows sparks flying on the road as the out-of-control truck veered toward an electricity post. The violent collision caused the street lamps and billboard lights to briefly flicker as the pole's cables were left dangling over the pavement.

Onlooker Apichart Sophalert, 49, said he warned Woraphol to remain inside his mangled truck due to the risk of electrocution from the fallen wires.

Rescue teams soon at the scene to extract the injured driver, Woraphol Phutthapong, 25, from the wreckage. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. He claimed he failed to see the road divider before the crash.

A police spokesman said: ‘We will question the driver again and conduct the alcohol level test before deciding on further legal action.'

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
