Hong Kong Airlines flight makes emergency landing after overhead compartment fire
On March 20, Hong Kong Airlines flight HX115 encountered an emergency mid-flight when a fire broke out in an overhead luggage compartment, causing panic among passengers. Thanks to the quick response of the crew and the cooperation of passengers, the fire was swiftly extinguished. The flight was then rerouted for an emergency landing at Fuzhou Changle International Airport, where it landed safely.
Flight HX115 took off from Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport at 12:56 PM, bound for Hong Kong International Airport. However, at around 1:20 PM, a passenger noticed flames and a strong burning plastic smell coming from the overhead compartment, shouting, "Fire!" The alarming situation immediately drew the attention of both crew and passengers.
The cabin crew acted swiftly, grabbing fire extinguishers to tackle the flames. Meanwhile, passengers also assisted by passing bottled water to the affected area. Their combined efforts successfully brought the fire under control, preventing a potentially catastrophic situation.
After ensuring the fire was fully extinguished, the flight crew coordinated with Fuzhou Changle International Airport for an emergency landing. At approximately 2:04 PM, HX115 landed safely, where emergency services, including ambulances and fire trucks, were already on standby to ensure the safety of passengers and crew.
Upon landing, passengers were provided with meals and temporarily accommodated in a hotel. Hong Kong Airlines promptly arranged for another aircraft to transport passengers to Hong Kong, with the replacement flight expected to depart from Fuzhou at around 10 PM.
Hong Kong Airlines has announced a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the fire and prevent future occurrences. While some online speculation suggests that a power bank may have caught fire, airline representatives stated that the exact cause has not yet been confirmed and is still under investigation.
