It was set up under a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly on 28 November 2012. The purpose of this day is to highlight the importance of forests and trees and promote their protection for the present and future generations. In view of the importance of the forests, it was decided to celebrate March 21 as 'World Forestry Day' at the 16th Conference of Food and Agriculture Organization in 1971.
