North Macedonian Students in Greece Hold Silent Vigil Protest for Kocani Tragedy Victims
Greece: North Macedonians Hold Silent Vigil Protest for Kocani Tragedy Victims - In a powerful display of grief and solidarity, young students and citizens from North Macedonia organized a memorial event in Thessaloniki to honor the 60 victims of the tragic fire in the city of Kocani.
Holding placards bearing the names of the deceased, many were visibly emotional, with some shedding tears as they stood in silence for for 60 minutes—one minute for each life lost.
Among the messages displayed were calls for justice and accountability for those responsible for the tragedy. One sign read, “60 minutes for 60 victims of the fire,” referring to the 59 people who perished inside the nightclub and the ambulance driver who succumbed after a night of transporting lifeless bodies from the inferno. A somber black list displayed the names of those who lost their lives so unjustly.
As the silent vigil unfolded, many reflected not only on the lost lives but also on the dozens of survivors still battling severe injuries and burns, fighting for their lives in the aftermath of the disaster.
"We are here as people from North Macedonia and North Macedonian students studying in Thessaloniki. I want to thank the Greek people for their solidarity and the Greek authorities for allowing this protest to take place. I also want to thank the Greek people who showed up and expressed their support."
Said Despoina, a 21-year-old North Macedonian student from Ohrid, who is studying in Thessaloniki and participated in the event, expressed her gratitude to the Greek people for their solidarity, as well as to other Balkan countries for their support.
