The Parliament of Uganda on Thursday gave the greenlight to the government's decision to deploy the national army, the Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF), to South Sudan to help restore calm in capital city Juba. The UPDF had already been deployed in South Sudan earlier this month without the approval by Parliament, sparking vehement reactions from the parliament. But following this week's Parliamentary discussions, the deployment was eventually approved. With an unknown number of troops deployed, UPDF will be in South Sudan specifically for a peace enforcement mission. The deployment came as tensions escalated between President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar. Uganda has intervened militarily in South Sudan twice before, in 2013 and 2016. UN agencies have already raised concerns over the escalating violence which has already displaced 50,000 people since late February. South Sudan descended into civil war in late 2013 and the conflict has created one of the fastest growing refugee crises in the world. The Parliament of Uganda on Thursday gave the greenlight to the government's decision to deploy the national army, the Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF), to South Sudan to help restore calm in capital city Juba.
