Australian tourist killed when snorkeling boat capsizes off coast of Bali
An Australian tourist was killed and two others seriously injured when their boat capsized in rough seas in Indonesia.
Anna Maree Blight, 39, was sailing with 10 other Aussie passengers on the Sea Dragon 2 when a rogue wave crashed into the tour boat off the popular island of Nusa Penida southeast of Bali on March 21.
Anna was thrown overboard as a second powerful surge flipped the vessel over. Terrified holidaymakers scrambled to climb on top of the overturned boat, but Anna reportedly drowned.
The tour operator dispatched a second boat to save the group who were stuck amid chuning waters for more than an hour. Police photos showed several tourists sitting on top of the overturned boat's hull when the rescue team arrived. They were taken to the seaside town of Sanur.
Local police spokesman Agus Widiono said Anna was found dead while Australian couple Gabriel Hijniakoff, 29, and Cintamani Warrington, 32, suffered severe burns from the boat engine. The pair were given first aid and flown to Denpasar City to receive further treatment.
Anna, the director of a Melbourne-based finance firm Cor Cordis, was celebrating her birthday in Bali when the incident occurred.
Cor Cordis CEO Daniel Juratowitch said in a statement: 'Anna was an extraordinary professional, an exceptional leader, and a true friend to many who knew her.
'From the moment she joined our firm, I had the privilege of watching her grow into the remarkable person she became. Her passion, determination, and kindness inspired everyone around her. She had an incredible future ahead, and her loss is deeply felt by all of us.'
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing assistance to Anna's family.
A department spokesman said: 'We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time. The Department is also providing consular assistance to two Australians who were injured in the same incident.'
Maritime accidents are common in Indonesia due to poor construction and weak safety inforcement. Boats remain a popular mode of transport across the 17,000 islands on the archipelago.
