Recently, in Shanghai, a man captured a fascinating moment as a spotted dove built a nest on his shoes, which were left to dry on his balcony. The bird laid two eggs, successfully hatching two baby doves.

Zhang Dongsheng, a director at the Shanghai Wildlife Conservation Association, explained that spotted doves are common in the city. In spring, they typically build nests using small twigs in tree branches. However, some particularly bold birds may "move in" on residents' windowsills or flower pots. Both male and female doves take turns incubating the eggs, with the hatching period lasting about 15 to 18 days. Once hatched, the chicks usually leave the nest after around 14 days.

Zhang also advised residents that if they prefer not to have doves nesting near their homes, they should remove any twigs the birds use for building. However, for those who welcome them, it’s best to avoid disturbing the nesting and hatching process and refrain from offering food or assistance. This helps preserve the birds' natural instincts and also prevents potential health risks, such as avian flu or parasites.
