Turkey - March 23, 2025 Many people, including Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, were arrested and sent to prison. The public gathered in front of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in Sarachane to protest the arrests. During the protest in front of the municipality, a group of thousands of students marched in front of the Bozdoğan Kemeri, where the police had set up barricades. (The police had blockaded this road to prevent people from going to Taksim) When the students charged the barricades, the police intervened violently with tear gas and plastic bullets. When the students did not disperse despite repeated interventions, the police launched a comprehensive attack. Both the Bozdoğan Kemeri and the front of the municipality building were completely evacuated. Many people were detained. Many people escaped the intervention and took refuge in the city hall. The police also attacked those who escaped the intervention.
