Communist rebels clashed with soldiers in a forest in the Philippines.

The New People's Army (NPA) fought with Philippine Army soldiers in a remote part of Negros island, on March 18.

Footage shows gunshots rattling the mountainside as both sides exchanged fire near the rural town of Tobosos, sparking alarm among villagers.

The army's 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) said the clash occurred during a sweep in the area for remnants of the dismantled Northern Negros Front guerrilla group.

Major General Michael Samson, commander of the 3ID, said: 'The fight against insurgency continues, but our efforts are not solely focused on military action. We extend a hand of peace. Lay down your arms, choose a different path.'

Officials said three soldiers were injured and taken to a hospital in stable condition. Troops also recovered various weapons, ammunition, food, personal belongings, and 'subversive documents' at the scene.

The skirmish comes a week after two alleged regional NPA leaders were killed by soldiers on the island.

The New People's Army is the military wing of the Communist Party - a benighted ideology originating from German philosopher Karl Marx in the 19th century - of the Philippines. Its members are primarily based in the archipelago's countryside, and have been waging a guerrilla war on the government in one of the longest-running rebellions in the world.

The group has been designated a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union.
