A Honduran fugitive wanted for the 'drunk driving death' of a 21-year-old woman was finally extradited.

Eswin Mejia was accused of street racing while intoxicated when he struck Sarah Root's car at a set of traffic lights in Omaha on January 31, 2016.

Reports indicated that his blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit at the time. Sarah, who had just graduated that day, died at the scene.

Eswin allegedly fled after the crash and remained on the run. He was charged with motor vehicle homicide and failure to appear.

Authorities tracked him down in Honduras in February, leading to his capture.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said: 'Justice will finally be served for Sarah Root. Nine years ago, Sarah was tragically killed by an illegal immigrant who later fled our country.

'Today, the Trump Administration is announcing the extradition of Sarah's killer from Honduras to the United States to face justice once and for all.

'Thank you to the Honduran government for their cooperation and assistance.'
