The Sakurajima Volcano erupted, spewing a towering plume of ash and smoke that soared 1,800 metres above the crater in Japan.

Authorities confirmed the volcanic activity took place on Sunday, March 23, around 5:55 am, marking the 43rd eruption of the year.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage following the incident.

Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes, with a history of frequent eruptions. Originally an island, it became a peninsula after a significant eruption in 1914.
