The Assamese name of the black softshell( Bormuria kaso). India is home to 29 species of freshwater turtles and tortoises, including the black softshell turtle. This species bears a striking resemblance to the Indian peacock softshell turtle (Nilssonia hurum), which is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Accurate identification of the black softshell turtle, also known as the Bostami turtle – named after the Bayazid Bostami shrine in Chittagong, Bangladesh – is crucial, yet challenging, in determining its exact population.
