Airstrikes and drone attacks reported along Thai-Myanmar border
Airstrikes and explosions were reported as the Burmese junta clashed with resistance forces along the Thai-Myanmar border.
Multiple blasts rang throughout a remote forest as the Myanmar military bombed a guerilla encampment near the border province of Tak in northern Thailand, on March 23.
The army reportedly deployed a fighter jet to bomb Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) members stationed in the area. One person suffered minor injuries and structural damage to the base was reported.
The airstrike was reportedly carried out in retaliation after the KNLA dropped drone bombs on a Myanmar military camp in the same region in early March.
The Royal Thai Air Force said it scrambled two fighter jets to patrol the airspace after a Burmese plan was detected flying close to Thai territory.
Around 110 Karen civilians — mostly women and children — fled across the border to seek refuge in Thailand. They crossed at a natural border point near Ban Mae Salit Luang village, where Thai authorities and local agencies provided them with security and humanitarian assistance.
Myanmar has fallen into civil war following the removal of democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, with a military coup in 2021.
Soldiers responded with barbaric force on protesting civilians leading to widespread condemnation and financial sanctions. Rebel groups and civilian militias around the country have since been locked in a series of ongoing clashes with the ruling military.
Aung San Suu Kyi has since been jailed for 33 years on politically motivated charges and is likely to die behind bars unless the army is toppled - a tragic end the politician hailed by Barack Obama as an 'inspirational icon of democracy'.
