A Swiss tourist suffered serious injuries after a palm tree toppled onto the car she was traveling in during a storm in Indonesia.

Olivia Clerici, 46, was returning to her hotel when powerful gales uprooted the 50ft tree and it fell onto the road in the Karangasem Regency on the island of Bali on March 22.

The tree snapped with a loud crack before crashing down on the passing car, flattening the roof and leaving both Olivia and her Indonesian tour guide I Komang Seriata, 58, injured.

A rescue team rushed at the scene to extract the pair from the wreckage. Footage shows firemen and residents trying to lift the fallen palm tree off of the crumped vehicle.

Seriata was found conscious in his seat, suffering from neck, spine, and waist injuries. However, Olivia reportedly bore the brunt of the impact, sustaining an open wound on her head and a fractured right knee.

Both were rushed to a hospital, where the Swiss holidaymaker was being closely monitored by doctors.

Ida Bagus Ketut Arimbawa, head of the local disaster response office, said: 'Strong winds will occur until March 27 based on the forecast by the meteorological department.

'The winds were quite strong when the Swiss guest passed by the area with the driver. Suddenly, a tree toppled over and crashed onto their car, leaving both occupants injured.

'Emergency responders from the Manggis Health Center swiftly evacuated the victims by ambulance and rushed them to Karangasem Regional Hospital. The driver, who also served as a guide, sustained neck and lower back pain and has since undergone an X-ray. Meanwhile, the tourist, Olivia, suffered severe injuries.'

An onlooker named I Ketut Wirta, 55, said he heard the tree come crashing down during heavy rain and strong winds.

He said: 'I heard the sound of the tree falling, followed by a car horn blaring continuously. When I rushed outside, I saw a black Toyota Avanza Veloz crushed under the tree, with the two victims trapped inside.'

Local authorities said the wreckage has since been cleared.

Pandu Prapanca Lagosa, Deputy Regent of Karangasem, visited Olivia in the hospital as she continues her recovery.
