An elderly pet chihuahua was rescued after plunging into a 66ft deep drain.

The 17-year-old frightened pooch named Google sparked a dramatic three-hour rescue mission when he accidentally slipped into the narrow channel at his home in Chiang Mai province in northern Thailand.

Animal rescuers arrived at the scene after receiving a report from Google's owners at around 6 pm. However, the rescue effort proved difficult due to the tight confines of the drain.

Google, who suffers canine cognitive disorder, also kept retreating deeper into the pipe out of fear on March 24.

The rescuers later used a tube to gently pull the aging canine out of the hole. Footage shows them lifting the sludge-drenched dog to safety as the pet owners cheered in relief.

Village officer Phavichit Boonchala said: 'We want to remind residents who have a drain pit to keep it tightly closed to prevent kids or pets from falling inside. This will also keep reptiles such as snakes from entering their homes.'

The average Chihuahua lifespan is 14–16 years but they have been known to reach 20 years - provided they avoid falling into too many drains.
